SAMPLE -- The Throne
Act One Scene 1 – The Throne Room
The throne room of King Herod. He is sitting on the throne, while being waited upon by female servants, fanning him and feeding him fruit. Anthony, Captain of the Guard, enters with a prisoner. The prisoner, which is wearing a black hood and obviously beaten, is being dragged by two guards, Caius and Laramaus.
Herod -- And what have we here, my honorable captain? All trussed like a pig. And squealing like one, too. How annoying.
Caius -- Shut up! (Kicks the prisoner)
Herod -- So wonderfully brutish, yet effective. Do you select your men for their intelligence or brawn, Anthony?
Anthony -- The Palace Guard requires strength of character and body, your highness. The selection process is designed to maximize …
Herod -- I really don’t care. So why have you brought this foul smelling thing to me?
Anthony -- You ordered me to bring all seditious individuals to you, your highness. You specifically called for Polonius to be found.
Herod -- This is Polonius?
Anthony -- Yes, your highness.
Herod -- Well, well, well! You have indeed done a good deed. Have your brutes bring the pig closer. Can he still talk?
Anthony -- We haven’t cut out his tongue, yet.
Herod -- You soldiers have all the fun. So the high and mighty Polonius is brought to his knees. Did you really think I wouldn’t hear about your plans. You fool! I’ve known from the very beginning about your ‘secret’ meetings with the other councils members. Your messages to and from Rome. About all your whining. Herod is too hard! Too demanding! You really think the emperor would ever depose me? What on earth for?
Polonius -- Because you’re a Jew!
Herod -- I am not a Jew!
Polonius -- Your father was a Jew. I don’t care what favors he did for Roman he was born a Jew and all of his family are filthy Jews!
Herod -- My father was granted Roman citizenship for what he did for Rome! He and my Grandfather ruled this land before Rome even set foot here. We welcomed Rome with open arms.
Polonius -- And now you enslave the very people who put you in power!
Herod -- Are you such a Jew lover that you care?
Polonius -- No, I would rid them from the land!
Herod -- Then who would be your slave? No, foolish Polonius, I elect to keep the Jews here as subjects.
Polonius -- Brothers, you mean!
Herod -- How dare you!
Polonius -- Only a fellow Jew would rebuild their temple! You’re a Jew all right! Your pretense as a Roman is just to keep the throne!
Herod -- Get this creature out of my sight!
Anthony -- Pick him up!
Caius and Laramaus pick up Polonius and start to drag him out. He is kicking and screaming his lines as he exits.
Polonius -- You don’t deserve to sit on the throne!
Herod -- Take him away!
Polonius -- The Jews hate you and the Romans laugh at you!
Herod -- Shut him up!
Polonius -- Some one will rise up against you!
Herod -- Never!
Polonius -- That throne belongs to another!
Herod -- No! It’s mine! Not you or anybody else is going to take it away from me! It’s mine! It’s mine!
