SAMPLE -- Eve's Lament

Theme – our sin affects many.

Scene- A pregnant Eve is kneeling at the grave of Abel. There is a marker of some kind. Eve begins Upstage of the marker.

Eve I found these lilies near your fields. I thought you might want them nearer to you. I don’t remember you growing them, but perhaps I was too busy cleaning your house or mending your clothes or … I know I never really looked outside your home. I was too busy arranging your life for you instead of watching you love the things you loved. Ever since I lost control of my life I thought I had to control all others. I didn’t know how to let you live your life.

But you really loved to be outdoors, didn’t you, my son? You loved growing things. The dirt, the sun, the labor. You loved it all. Even as a little boy you marveled at every weed that peaked its head out of the ground. It was nothing for me to walk into you and your brother’s room and find piles of dirt here and there. Each one having some flower or plant poking out. I was forever sweeping that place. It was not my favorite activity, I’ll have you know!

Your brother hated it, too. He was always tripping on the piles. That’s how he got that scar on his arm. He stumbled over one of your little gardens and cut a bad gash. I love him, but he was always a bit vain. A beautiful son and a handsome man. But he knew it. Any little mark or scar would drive him crazy. Any mark …

You kept asking your father and I why the plants lived outdoors but died in your room. Your father was always so patient. He’d take you outside and explain how things grew. How every element must be present. The sun, the dirt, the rain. All there and all at the right time.
