Mom and Carl enter the room.
Mom -- Now don’t touch anything, Carl. Grandma likes to have everything in the same place.
Carl -- How can she tell? She never moves.
Mom -- She moves. How do you think they take her to the dining room?
Carl -- Wheelchair?
Mom -- She doesn’t need a wheelchair. She can walk just fine. Hi, mom. Happy Mother’s Day. Tell her Happy Mother’s Day, Carl.
Carl -- Happy Mother’s Day, grandma. Can she even hear us?
Mom -- Of course she can. She not only hears, but understands. Isn’t that right, mom?
Carl -- How do you know?
Mom -- I just know. Somewhere down deep inside of her mind is the mother I love. She may not be able to respond, but she has to hear me.
Carl -- I don’t remember much about her.
Mom -- She was a great mother. She braided my hair and ironed my clothes. And she was always so full of laughter that she made growing up such a happy time. I owe her so much.
Carl -- Isn’t is sad to see her like this?
Mom -- Yeah, a little. But she stood by me when my boyfriends dumped me or the girls at school made fun of me. I’ll never leave her alone. She may not be able to talk to me, but she still has a lot to say.
Carl -- Huh? Like what?
Mom -- Well … she’s teaching me to be patient. And hopeful. She reminds me of the fragility of life. Of how we need to stay close to God every moment of every day. We never know what this life will throw at us.
Carl -- Talks a lot for a old lady who can’t talk.
Mom -- Now, behave. Now where is it?
Carl -- Where is what?
Mom -- Her card. I got her a Mother’s Day Card and I can’t find it.
Carl -- I saw it in the car.

Grandma is in a nursing home and her daughter and Grandson come to visit her. She appears to be not be able to communicate and alseep all of the time, but when mom is out of the room she perks up and talks to Carl. She teaches him a lesson in appreciation and parental love.
